Crossing the great plains
After many years of persecution, being driven out of their cities and traveling thousands of miles, the Mormons finally settled in the Utah Territory (now known as Utah). According to mormon history, the saints remained in peace for ten years from the day they arrived in Utah. James Buchanan apparently thought there was a rebellion in the Utah Territory. A large federal army was sent to the Territory. Brigham Young, determined not to be driven out of another city again, sent the Nauvoo legion to block the army’s entrance. The whole situation was resolved without any bloodshed between the armies and was resolved by negotiations.
